Do United States citizens need a visa for Türkiye?

No, not for a tourist or business visit of up to 90 days. According to the U.S. Embassy in Türkiye, ordinary US passport holders are exempted from a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, citing the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exemption covers tourism and business visits; any other purpose of travel, such as work, study or a stay longer than 90 days, requires a Turkish visa obtained in advance or a residence permit after arrival.

This is a recent improvement for American travellers. The e-Visa that many US visitors still remember buying online is no longer needed for ordinary passports; the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps the e-Visa system for nationalities that still need it, valid only for tourism or commerce.

The 90-in-180 rule explained for American visitors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the regulation of 90 days of stay within the last 180 days is binding for all foreigners travelling to Türkiye. The period is counted backwards from each day you are in the country, so a traveller who spent 60 days in Türkiye in March and April can stay only 30 more days before the end of August. Days do not reset when you leave; they roll off only as the 180-day window moves.

  • Two passports do not double the allowance: the Ministry states that foreigners holding two passports cannot stay 90 days each on different passports within the same 180 days.
  • Turkish consular offices issue visas with a maximum duration of stay of 90 days in every category, so a consular visa does not extend the tourist allowance either.
  • With a valid visa or exemption you do not need a residence permit for up to 90 days; beyond that, a residence permit is mandatory.

Passport rules and what immigration checks on arrival

Entry for Americans is a passport stamp, not a visa sticker. Border officers check validity, blank pages and the count of days used in the current 180-day window. The U.S. Embassy advises a passport valid for six months beyond the planned entry date with enough blank space for entry and exit stamps.

  • Passport validity: 6 months beyond entry, and never less than 60 days beyond the permitted stay.
  • Blank pages: at least enough for an entry and an exit stamp on every trip.
  • Purpose: tourism or business. Journalists, students, employees and long-term residents need the appropriate visa or permit.
  • Cruise passengers: for touristic entry via naval ports, local governorates may issue visa-free permits of up to 72 hours, valid only for sightseeing near the port of entry.

Who still needs a visa: official passports, work, study and long stays

The exemption belongs to ordinary passports. The U.S. Embassy states that holders of official and diplomatic passports on official business need a visa issued by a Turkish embassy or consulate before arrival. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds that the visa regime for work and education differs from tourism, and that visitors who are not exempt obtain visas or book appointments through the Pre-Application System for Turkish Sticker Visa at visa.gov.tr.

Purpose of travelOrdinary US passportWhat to obtain
Tourism or business, up to 90 daysVisa-freeNothing; passport stamp on arrival
Stay longer than 90 daysExemption covers the first 90 daysResidence permit after arrival
EmploymentNot covered by the exemptionWork permit and visa through a Turkish mission
StudyNot covered by the exemptionStudent visa, then registration with the local police
Official or diplomatic passport on official businessNot applicableVisa from a Turkish embassy or consulate before arrival

The Ministry notes that foreigners who will reside, work or study register with the nearest local police department on arrival, regardless of the validity of their visa. That registration is the start of the residence permit process, not an optional formality.

Staying longer than 90 days: the residence permit

US citizens planning to remain in Türkiye for more than 90 days must obtain a residence permit after arrival, as the U.S. Embassy states. Digital nomads, retirees wintering on the coast and students on longer programmes all fall into this group. The permit is applied for inside Türkiye and does not depend on holding a visa first, because the visa-free entry covers the initial period.

⏱️ Application Steps

1. Step 1: Enter visa-free

Arrive on an ordinary US passport valid at least six months beyond entry and receive the entry stamp; the 90-day clock starts.

2. Step 2: Decide early

If the stay may exceed 90 days, start the residence permit process well inside the first month rather than at day 85.

3. Step 3: Register locally

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires foreigners who will reside, work or study to register with the nearest local police department on arrival.

4. Step 4: Apply for the residence permit

Submit the application inside Türkiye before the 90 days run out; the permit replaces the exemption as your legal basis of stay.

5. Step 5: Keep the 60-day passport margin

Your passport must remain valid at least 60 days beyond the stay granted by the permit.

Working in Türkiye on a US passport

Working is never covered by the visa exemption. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the route: apply to the nearest Turkish mission for a work permit and visa with your passport, the application form and a letter from your employer. Your employer submits the remaining documents to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security within ten working days, and the Ministry finalises applications within thirty days at the latest. After arrival, and before starting work, you register with the local police within one month to obtain the residence permit. The U.S. Embassy states plainly that US citizens need a valid work permit to work in Türkiye.

Pros of visa-free entry for US citizens

  • No fee and no application before a tourist or business trip
  • Up to 90 days in every 180-day period, multiple entries
  • The passport stamp is issued on arrival with no advance decision to wait for

Cons of visa-free entry for US citizens

  • The 90-in-180 window catches repeat visitors who assume each trip resets the count
  • The 60-day passport margin beyond the permitted stay is stricter than most travellers expect
  • Work, study and stays over 90 days need separate permits that cannot be arranged at the border

Common mistakes American travellers make at the Turkish border

Because entry is easy, mistakes cluster around what the exemption does not cover. These are the recurring ones, each with a simple fix.

  • Buying an e-Visa from a third-party site out of habit. Ordinary US passports do not need one; the money is wasted.
  • Counting 90 days per trip instead of 90 days per 180-day window.
  • Travelling with a passport that expires within six months of entry, or with no blank pages left for stamps.
  • Starting a job or a course on the tourist exemption instead of the correct visa and permit.
  • Assuming an official passport enjoys the same exemption; on official business it needs a visa in advance.
