Cambodia Visa for US Citizens: Visa on Arrival, e-Visa and Embassy Route
US citizens get a Cambodia tourist visa on arrival, online or at the embassy: US$30 consular fee, 30-day stay plus a 30-day extension and the 6-month passport rule.
About this route
This guide covers the official Cambodia entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for Cambodia?
Yes. United States passport holders need a visa for Cambodia, and they can obtain it on arrival, online as an e-Visa, or in advance from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Washington. The embassy's tourist visa page answers the key question directly: yes, you can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival, provided you have a valid passport and a recent passport photo; the forms are distributed at the airport. The same page recommends obtaining the visa before travel to avoid inconvenience.
The tourist visa (Type T) is a sticker visa, which is why the embassy needs the actual passport for consular processing. On arrival the sticker is issued at the airport counter; online, the e-Visa is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through evisa.gov.kh, a system the embassy has no access to.
Three ways to get the Cambodia tourist visa
All three routes produce the same 30-day tourist permission. The differences are where you queue, what you pay and how far in advance you must act.
| Route | Where | What the embassy says |
|---|---|---|
| Visa on arrival | Cambodian international airports | Available; bring a valid passport and a recent photo, forms are handed out on arrival; check with the airline that you can board without a visa |
| e-Visa | evisa.gov.kh (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) | The embassy has no access to e-Visa submissions; contact the e-Visa administrator directly for help |
| Consular sticker visa | Royal Embassy of Cambodia, Washington, walk-in or by mail | US$30, 7 to 10 working days plus return shipping for mailed applications |

How long can Americans stay in Cambodia?
The tourist visa allows a stay of 30 days upon entering the country. The embassy confirms that the visa can be extended after entry for another 30 days at the Cambodia Immigration Office, so a single tourist visa can cover a stay of up to two months in total. Longer stays or work require a different visa category.
- Tourist visa (Type T): 30 days, extendable once by 30 days inside Cambodia.
- Business visa (Type E): for work and longer commercial stays; the embassy publishes a separate requirements page for it.
- Courtesy visa (Type C): for registered NGOs with a valid memorandum of understanding.
- Official and diplomatic visas (Types B and A): for government travel.
Cambodia's visa exemptions apply to ASEAN member states and a short list of other countries; the United States is not among them, so every American visitor needs one of the three routes above.
Cambodia visa cost for US citizens
At the embassy in Washington the tourist visa fee is US$30, paid by money order or cashier's check payable to the Embassy of Cambodia. The embassy does not accept personal cheques, credit cards or cash. Fees at the airport and on the e-Visa portal are set by the Cambodian government and paid there; Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy, and any assistance fee we quote is separate from these amounts.
| Item | Official figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Consular tourist visa fee | US$30 | Money order or cashier's check only |
| Processing at the embassy | 7 to 10 working days | Plus return shipping for mailed applications; fast-track service on Wednesdays |
| Stay on entry | 30 days | Extendable by 30 days at the Cambodia Immigration Office |
Documents required for the Cambodia tourist visa
The consular list is short and the same items serve you at the airport counter.
- A passport valid for at least 6 months before the travel entry date, based on the expiry date; the embassy needs the actual passport because the sticker is affixed to a visa page.
- The visa application form with one 2 by 2 inch passport photo attached, taken within the last six months.
- The fee of US$30 by money order or cashier's check for consular applications.
- For mailed applications, a tracking number and a prepaid return envelope.
How to apply at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia step by step
Walk-in applications are accepted without an appointment from 10:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, and mailed applications are accepted from anywhere in the United States. The embassy's guide lists both channels.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Check the passport
At least 6 months of validity before the entry date, and a blank visa page for the sticker.
2. Step 2: Complete the form
Download the visa application form from the embassy site and attach one 2 by 2 inch photo taken within six months.
3. Step 3: Prepare the fee
US$30 as a money order or cashier's check payable to the Embassy of Cambodia. No cash, cards or personal cheques.
4. Step 4: Submit in person or by mail
Walk in during the stated hours, or mail the passport, form and fee with a tracking number and a prepaid return envelope.
5. Step 5: Check the status after 7 to 10 working days
Use the embassy's online status page once the processing time has passed; the passport is returned with the sticker visa.
Several applications can be submitted together, which suits families. Applicants who live far from Washington use the mail route; the embassy recommends a tracked service because the package contains passports.
Arrival in Cambodia and the visa on arrival counter
The embassy publishes an arrival procedure guide for travellers entering Cambodia. Travellers who choose the visa on arrival fill in the forms handed out at the airport, present the passport and a recent passport photo, pay the fee and receive the sticker before passport control. The embassy suggests confirming with the airline that you can board without a visa, because carriers apply their own checks at US departure airports.
Pros of the visa on arrival
- No paperwork before departure beyond a photo
- Issued on the spot at the airport
- Same 30-day stay, extendable once
Cons of the visa on arrival
- Queues when several flights land at once
- Airlines may question boarding without a visa
- Not available at every land crossing; the sticker or e-Visa is safer for overland routes
