NZeTA for US Citizens: Cost, Validity and How to Request It

US citizens need an NZeTA, not a visa, for New Zealand. From NZD $17, valid 2 years, 3 months per visit, 72-hour processing and the funds rule explained.

Important Conditions
NZeTA required before boarding for visits and Auckland transit; valid 2 years, multiple entries; passport valid 3 months beyond departure; not for medical treatment or stays over 3 months

About this route

This guide covers the official New Zealand entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.

Do United States citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

Not a visa, but an authorisation. United States passport holders are visa waiver travellers, so they visit New Zealand without a visitor visa, but they must hold a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before boarding. Immigration New Zealand states that most travellers need either an NZeTA or a visa, and the New Zealand consulates in the United States repeat the rule for holidaymakers: everyone except Australian and New Zealand citizens needs an NZeTA or a visitor visa.

The NZeTA is linked to your passport and checked by the airline before you fly. It is also required to transit through Auckland International Airport, even if you never leave the terminal, for stops of up to 24 hours. It covers multiple trips for as long as it stays valid.

What the NZeTA allows and what it does not

Immigration New Zealand lists the permissions precisely. With an NZeTA a US citizen can travel to New Zealand without a visa, transit through Auckland for up to 24 hours, visit for up to 3 months at a time and travel multiple times while the authority is valid, which is 2 years for ordinary travellers and 5 years for airline crew.

  • Allowed: tourism, visiting family and friends, short business visits, cruise ship arrivals, and airport transit.
  • Not allowed on an NZeTA: medical treatment or consultation, which needs a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa; stays longer than 3 months; and any trip where you need a sponsor.
  • Apply for a visa instead: if you have a criminal conviction, have been deported before, or are unsure you meet the character requirements, Immigration New Zealand says to apply for a visa and hold it before you travel.

How long can Americans stay in New Zealand on an NZeTA?

Each visit may last up to 3 months; the 6-month allowance on the same page applies only to citizens of the United Kingdom. Because the NZeTA is valid for 2 years and covers multiple entries, a US traveller can, in the words of Immigration New Zealand's own example, make a first visit of 3 months, leave, and later make a second visit of 3 months on the same authority.

Your departure date must be within 3 months of your arrival. If you want to stay longer, for example for an extended tour or to study, the correct route is a visitor visa or a student visa applied for through Immigration Online before you travel, not an extension of the NZeTA.

NZeTA cost for US citizens

The official NZeTA page gives the cost as from NZD $17. Immigration New Zealand notes that requesting through the NZeTA mobile app is cheaper than the online form, and the app lets you request authorities for up to 10 people in one session. Fees are paid to the New Zealand government; Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy and any fee we quote for assistance is separate.

How to request an NZeTA step by step

Immigration New Zealand tells travellers to use only the official NZeTA website or mobile app. Third-party sites resell the same request at a higher price. The official sequence is short.

⏱️ Application Steps

1. Step 1: Gather your documents

Have the passport you will travel on at hand. It must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave New Zealand.

2. Step 2: Open the NZeTA app or website

The app is cheaper and can handle up to 10 people at once. For a child, you enter your own passport details as the requester.

3. Step 3: Enter your identity details exactly as in the passport

A single mismatched character between the request and the passport is the most common reason an airline cannot find the authority at check-in.

4. Step 4: Pay the fee

Pay online from NZD $17. Payment goes to Immigration New Zealand.

5. Step 5: Allow 72 hours

Most requests are decided sooner, but Immigration New Zealand asks you to allow 72 hours. Do not book a same-day departure around it.

Cruise passengers follow the same route and must hold the NZeTA before the ship departs for New Zealand. Airline crew do not use the app at all; their employer requests a Crew ETA through the batch system.

Passport, funds and character requirements at the border

Three checks matter for Americans arriving on an NZeTA. First, the passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date, which is stricter than the rule many US travellers expect. Second, visitors must show they have enough money to live on: NZD $1,000 a month, or NZD $400 a month if accommodation is already paid. Third, you must meet New Zealand's character requirements.

Immigration New Zealand is explicit that a traveller who is unsure about the character requirements, for example because of a conviction or a past deportation, should apply for a visa in advance rather than rely on an NZeTA. A visa is decided by an immigration officer before you fly; an NZeTA holder finds out at the airport.

NZeTA or visitor visa: which one should you choose?

For the vast majority of US tourists and business visitors the NZeTA is the only sensible route: cheaper, faster and reusable for two years. The visitor visa, applied for through Immigration Online with a RealMe account, uploaded documents and online payment, exists for the cases the NZeTA excludes.

Pros of requesting the NZeTA yourself

  • The app fee starts at NZD $17 and one request lasts 2 years
  • Up to 10 family members can be requested in one session
  • No supporting documents beyond your passport details

Cons of requesting the NZeTA yourself

  • An identity detail typed differently from the passport can leave you without a valid authority at check-in
  • The NZeTA gives no advance decision on character issues; refusal happens at the border
  • Travellers who need more than 3 months or medical treatment waste the fee because they need a visa anyway

Transit through Auckland and group travel

Auckland is a common stop on routes between the United States and Australia or the Pacific islands. To pass through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger you must be a citizen of a visa waiver country, an Australian permanent resident, or travelling to or from Australia, and you need the NZeTA for the transit even though you stay airside for no more than 24 hours.

Families and small groups benefit from the app's batch feature: one adult can request authorities for up to 10 people, entering their own passport details when requesting for a child. Larger organised groups that need a visa can use the Group Visitor Visa process through Immigration Online, which Immigration New Zealand suggests for faster processing.
