Jordan Visa for US Citizens: Visa on Arrival, e-Visa and the Allenby Rule
US citizens get a Jordan visa on arrival for 40 JOD at the airport and two land crossings, or an e-Visa for the Allenby Bridge. Stay and registration rules.
About this route
This guide covers the official Jordan entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for Jordan?
Yes. The U.S. Embassy in Amman states that a passport with at least 6 months of validity and a visa are required for entry into Jordan. The good news for American travellers is that the visa is issued on arrival at the main entry points, and it can also be obtained in advance as an e-Visa through the Ministry of Interior. The only crossing where a visa on arrival is not available is the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge from the West Bank, where an e-Visa is mandatory before you cross.
Jordanian immigration officers issue 30-day entry visas for a fee on arrival, and the e-Visa portal of the Ministry of Interior offers the same permission online for travellers who prefer to have it before departure. Both routes lead to the same tourist visa.
Where Americans can get a visa on arrival, and where they cannot
The distinction between crossings is the single most important thing to know about Jordan's visa rules, and it catches travellers who combine Jordan with Israel or the West Bank.
- Visa on arrival available: Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, the northern Sheikh Hussein crossing at the Israeli border, and the Eilat and Wadi Araba crossing near Aqaba.
- Visa on arrival not available: the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge crossing. Travellers must hold a valid Jordanian visa before arrival, and the embassy's June 2025 alert confirms that an e-Visa is mandatory before crossing there.
- Exit taxes elsewhere: the same alert notes that Israel charges an exit tax of US$180 on all US citizen visitors leaving overland, a cost to budget for on a two-country itinerary.

Jordan visa cost for US citizens
The U.S. Embassy's entry requirements alert gives the cost of the visa on arrival as 40 JOD, about US$56, paid at the airport or border. The Jordan Gate government portal notes that fees vary by visa type and duration and points travellers to the official visa website or the nearest Jordanian mission for current figures. Fees are paid to the Jordanian government; Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy and any assistance fee we quote is separate.

Documents required for the Jordan visa
For the visa on arrival the requirements are minimal, and for the e-Visa the Jordan Gate portal lists the uploads. Prepare both sets and you are covered whichever route you take.
- A passport with a minimum validity of 6 months.
- For the e-Visa: the completed online form, a passport-sized photo and a copy of the passport, uploaded to the portal.
- Hotel reservation details.
- Payment of the visa fee, in cash at the border or through the secure online portal for the e-Visa.
How to apply for the Jordan e-Visa step by step
The e-Visa is optional for airport arrivals and mandatory for the Allenby Bridge. The Jordan Gate portal describes the process, and the Ministry of Interior's e-application page hosts the visit visa service.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Check the passport
Six months of validity is required for entry, on arrival or with an e-Visa.
2. Step 2: Open the Ministry of Interior visit visa e-service
Register an account and complete the online application form.
3. Step 3: Upload the documents
A passport-sized photo, a copy of the passport and your hotel reservation details.
4. Step 4: Pay the visa fee online
Through the portal's secure payment page.
5. Step 5: Carry the approval
Print the e-Visa; at the Allenby Bridge it is checked before you cross, and at the airport it replaces the counter.
Jordan Gate advises applying well in advance of the travel date to avoid last-minute complications, and reminds travellers to check whether their nationality qualifies for the visa on arrival or e-Visa; US citizens do.
Staying longer than two weeks: the registration rule
A rule that most tourist guides skip, and the embassy states plainly: travellers on any visa other than the Jordan Pass, a transit visa or a Hajj visa who intend to remain in Jordan for longer than two weeks must register with the Public Security Directorate, one of its branches or a local police station. The registration must be completed before the initial two-week period from the date of entry expires. Failure to do so can mean personal liability and a fine of 200 JOD, payable in cash or by card at the point of departure.
Combining Jordan with Israel and the West Bank
Many Americans visit Petra and Wadi Rum on a trip that also includes Jerusalem, and the border logic decides the visa route. Entering from Israel at the northern Sheikh Hussein crossing or the southern Wadi Araba crossing, the visa on arrival is available. Entering via the Allenby Bridge from the West Bank, an e-Visa is mandatory. The embassy also warns that US passport holders are occasionally denied entry into Israel or the West Bank at the crossings, a decision that rests with those border officials.
| Entry point | Visa on arrival | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Queen Alia International Airport, Amman | Yes | Pay 40 JOD at the counter or arrive with an e-Visa |
| Sheikh Hussein crossing (north) | Yes | Visa on arrival available |
| Wadi Araba crossing (Aqaba) | Yes | Visa on arrival available |
| King Hussein/Allenby Bridge | No | Obtain the e-Visa before crossing |
Pros of the visa on arrival

- Available at the two land crossings most tourists use
Cons of the visa on arrival
- Not available at the Allenby Bridge, which many Jerusalem itineraries use
