Brazil e-Visa for US Citizens: Fee, Validity and Documents
US citizens now need an e-Visa for Brazil. The US$80.90 fee, 10-year validity, 90-day stays, required documents and the official portal, from official sources.
About this route
This guide covers the official Brazil entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for Brazil?
Yes. Since 10 April 2025 United States passport holders need a visa to enter Brazil, and for tourism and business trips the government issues it electronically. The U.S. Mission in Brazil confirmed that the Government of Brazil reinstated the visa requirement for all US nationals on that date, with an e-Visa option for qualified applicants. The years of visa-free travel that Americans enjoyed ended on 9 April 2025.
The electronic Visitor Visa is reserved for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia. Every other nationality, and every American who needs a different visa category such as residence or study, applies in person at a Brazilian consulate through the e-Consular appointment system.
Why the visa came back, and what it means for repeat visitors
Brazil first announced the return of the visa for Americans in 2024 and then postponed it by a year. The U.S. Embassy's April 2024 notice recorded both the delay and the terms that now apply: a fee of $80.90 and a visa valid for 10 years. For frequent travellers that is the important detail. One application covers a decade of trips, so the cost per visit is small even if you only go every few years.
Brazilian citizens, including dual nationals born in Brazil, are not covered by any of this. The Consulate General in Miami states that Brazilian citizens must travel with a Brazilian passport, whatever other passport they hold.

Brazil e-Visa cost for US citizens
The Consulate General of Brazil in Miami lists a single item under fees: the e-Visa payment of US$80.90, paid online during the application. That amount goes to the Brazilian government through the authorised portal. Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy; our assistance fee, if you choose to use it, is separate from the consular fee.
| Item | Official figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| e-Visa fee | US$80.90 | Consulate General in Miami |
| Validity | 10 years | U.S. Embassy in Brazil |

Documents required for the Brazil e-Visa
The list is short, and the consulate says the visa arrives in a few days when it is met in full. Missing or non-compliant items are the usual reason a file stalls.
- A valid passport, signed, valid until the end of the trip to Brazil, with 2 free visa pages.
- The visa application form, completed online in the portal.
- A passport-style photo, 2 by 2 inches, on a white background.
- Payment of the e-Visa fee of US$80.90.
Applicants under 18 add a birth certificate and an authorisation for the issuance of a Brazilian visa for a minor signed by both parents, plus copies of both parents' passports or photo ID. If only one parent appears on the birth certificate, only that parent signs; sole custody requires a notarised copy of the court order, and a deceased parent's death certificate must be presented. A parent whose name has changed since the child's birth certificate shows proof of the change. Children of Brazilian parents additionally sign a declaration that the child does not hold Brazilian citizenship.
How to apply for the Brazil e-Visa step by step
All e-Visa requests go through the government-authorised portal at brazil.vfsevisa.com; the consulates do not accept e-Visa applications in person or by email, and questions go to the Miami consulate's visa mailbox. The process is fully online.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Check your passport
It must be signed, valid until the end of your stay in Brazil and have 2 free visa pages. Renew first if it does not.
2. Step 2: Prepare the photo
A 2 by 2 inch passport-style photo on a white background, uploaded as a digital file.
3. Step 3: Complete the online form at brazil.vfsevisa.com
Enter your details exactly as they appear in the passport and upload the passport page and photo. Minors need the additional documents listed above.
4. Step 4: Pay US$80.90
The fee is paid online to the Brazilian government through the portal.
5. Step 5: Receive the e-Visa by email
When the requirements are met, the visa arrives in a few days. Print it and carry it with the same passport.
Business trips, longer stays and other visa types
The e-Visa covers tourism and business visits of up to 90 days. It does not cover paid work, residence, study or family reunification; those categories use the Temporary Residence Visas and are handled in person. The Consulate General in Miami accepts in-person applications for all other visa types only through appointments booked in the e-Consular system.
| Question | e-Visa | Consular visa |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia | All nationalities |
| Purpose | Tourism and business, up to 90 days | Residence, work, study, diplomatic and courtesy visas |
| Where | Online at brazil.vfsevisa.com | In person at the consulate, appointment via e-Consular |
| Fee | US$80.90 | Depends on the visa type |
| Validity | 10 years | As granted |
Pros of applying for the e-Visa yourself
- The only cost is the US$80.90 government fee
- No consulate visit and no appointment
- One approval lasts 10 years
Cons of applying for the e-Visa yourself
- A photo that is not 2 by 2 inches on a white background is the most common reason for a request to resubmit
- Minors' files need signatures and ID copies from both parents, which take time to gather
- The portal delivers by email in a few days only when the file is complete; a late application can miss the flight
Arrival in Brazil with an e-Visa
Print the e-Visa and carry it with the passport used in the application. Immigration officers at Brazilian airports check that the visa is linked to that passport and that the purpose of the trip matches tourism or business. Keep the stay within the 90 days allowed per visit.
Travellers who obtained the visa years earlier should check that the passport is still valid until the end of the new trip; the visa's 10-year validity does not extend the passport's. A new passport means a new application.
