Australian ETA for US Citizens: Cost, Validity and the App
US citizens enter Australia on an ETA (subclass 601) from the official app: AUD20 fee, 12-month validity, 3 months per visit, instant decisions and who needs a visa.
About this route
This guide covers the official Australia entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes, but not a visa in the traditional sense. United States passport holders enter Australia on an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), subclass 601, which is an electronic visa granted through the Australian ETA app. There is no visa-free entry: the U.S. Embassy in Canberra states that all non-Australian citizens travelling to Australia require a visa or visa waiver issued by the Australian Government, and for Americans that permission is the ETA. The Australian Embassy in Washington confirms that every ETA-eligible passport holder must apply through the app.
The ETA is attached to the passport electronically; no label is placed in the passport. Airlines check it at departure from the United States and Australian Border Force sees it on arrival. It allows tourism, visiting family and friends, and business visitor activities such as meetings and contract negotiations, but it is not a work visa.
What the Australian ETA lets you do, and what it forbids
The Department of Home Affairs lists the permitted activities precisely. As a business visitor you can make general business or employment enquiries, investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a contract, and take part in official government visits. You cannot work for or provide services to an Australian business, or sell goods or services directly to the public.
- Allowed: holidays, visiting family and friends, business meetings and negotiations, short courses that are not the main reason for the trip.
- Not allowed: paid work for an Australian employer; Home Affairs warns that working on an ETA can lead to cancellation, removal or refused entry.
- Different visa needed: study as the main purpose of travel needs a student visa; training at a childcare centre, studying to be a doctor, dentist, nurse or paramedic, or entering health care and hospital environments requires a Visitor visa (subclass 600) with health checks.

How long can Americans stay in Australia on an ETA?
Two numbers matter. The ETA is valid for travel to Australia for 12 months, or for the period your passport is valid, whichever is shorter. Within that year you can leave and re-enter as many times as you want. On each entry you can remain in Australia for up to 3 months.
Home Affairs adds a caution for frequent visitors: if you stay for long periods or make repeated visits, officers may ask about your travel purpose at the next entry, and an ETA holder found not to be a genuine visitor can have the ETA cancelled. Anyone who wants to stay longer than 3 months at a time must apply for a different visa before the ETA period ends; overstaying makes you an unlawful non-citizen who may be removed from Australia.
Australian ETA cost for US citizens
There is no Visa Application Charge for an ETA. The only cost is the application service fee of AUD20 for using the Australian ETA app, and Home Affairs states that no other charge is payable. The app itself is a free download from the App Store or Google Play. Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy; any fee we quote for assistance is separate from the AUD20 paid in the app.
| Item | Official figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Visa Application Charge | None | The ETA has no visa charge |
| App service fee | AUD20 | Paid in the Australian ETA app |
| Validity | 12 months | Or until the passport expires, whichever is shorter |
| Stay per entry | 3 months | Multiple entries within the validity |
Beware of look-alike websites. The Australian Embassy publishes a list of sites that are not official Department-approved platforms and asks travellers to report scams to Border Watch. Any site charging more than AUD20 is selling its own service.
How to apply for the Australian ETA step by step
The ETA cannot be requested on a website or in an ImmiAccount; it exists only in the Australian ETA app. Home Affairs describes the process, and the steps below follow it. A friend, family member, travel agent or industry representative can help, but you must be physically present when the application is made, because the app takes a live photo and scans your passport.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Download the Australian ETA app
Free from the App Store or Google Play. Only this app is an official channel.
2. Step 2: Scan your passport and take a live photo
Use the passport you will travel on. The ETA attaches to that passport, so a renewal means a new application.
3. Step 3: Answer every question and check the details
Home Affairs asks you to confirm that your name, date of birth and every answer are correct before submitting. Incorrect answers slow the decision.
4. Step 4: Pay the AUD20 service fee
Each family member, including children listed on a parent's passport, submits a separate application, but a family using one device can submit and pay for all applications together.
5. Step 5: Receive the result
In most cases the result is given immediately. Home Affairs suggests you do not make travel arrangements until the ETA is granted.
An application can take longer if the answers are incomplete, if more information is needed, or if your details are hard to verify. A small number of applications return a message that they cannot be assessed online; the Australian Embassy says those travellers without health or character concerns should call the Global Service Centre on +61 2 6196 0196 with their ETA reference number and passport details.
Criminal convictions, health checks and who cannot use the ETA
The ETA is an automated permission and it is not the right route for everyone. According to the Australian Embassy's visa FAQs, a traveller with a criminal conviction in any country should obtain police checks and apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) to be assessed against the character requirements, because arriving on an ETA with convictions can end in refused entry. Home Affairs gives the same advice for anyone who has previously failed the health requirement.
- Holders of a non-citizen passport, certificate of identity or other travel document cannot apply for an ETA.
- Australian citizens who also hold a US passport cannot apply; they enter on their Australian passport by automatic right.
- Applicants who provide incorrect information may have a granted ETA cancelled.
- ETA holders are personally liable for all healthcare costs in Australia; the United States has no reciprocal healthcare agreement, so travel insurance matters.
ETA or Visitor visa (subclass 600): which one for your trip?
For a holiday, a family visit or a business trip of up to 3 months, the ETA is the only sensible choice for an American traveller. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) exists for everything the ETA excludes: longer stays, health-related activities, and applicants who need a character or health assessment before travel. It is lodged online through an ImmiAccount, and the embassy reminds applicants not to book flights until the visa is granted.
| Question | ETA (subclass 601) | Visitor visa (subclass 600) |
|---|---|---|
| Where to apply | Australian ETA app only | Online through ImmiAccount |
| Cost | AUD20 service fee, no visa charge | Visa Application Charge set by Home Affairs |
| Stay | 3 months per entry, 12 months validity | As granted, including longer stays |
| Criminal record or health issue | Not suitable; risk of refusal at the border | Assessed before travel with police checks or health checks |
| Decision | Usually immediate | Published processing times, updated monthly |
Pros of applying for the ETA yourself
- AUD20 is the only cost and the result is usually immediate
- Twelve months of multiple entries from one application
- No documents beyond the passport and a live photo
Cons of applying for the ETA yourself
- A wrong answer in the app can lead to cancellation at the airport rather than a refusal at home
- Travellers with convictions or health issues waste the fee because they need a subclass 600 visa
- The ETA dies with the passport, so a renewal before the trip means applying again
Holding an ETA together with another Australian visa
Some Americans hold both an ETA and another visa, for example a student or work visa applied for later. Home Affairs explains the interaction. If you arrive with an ETA and a visa with a longer stay period, you enter on both and can stay for the longer period; once that exceeds 3 months the ETA ceases but the other visa continues. If you hold any other substantive visa, you enter on that visa and the ETA takes effect only when it ceases, though the 3-month ETA stay period still starts from your entry.
