Indonesia Visa on Arrival for US Citizens: e-VOA Fee, Stay and Documents
US citizens need an Indonesian visa on arrival, best obtained online as an e-VOA: IDR 500,000, 30-day stay, 6-month passport rule, arrival card and overstay fines.
About this route
This guide covers the official Indonesia entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. United States passport holders need a visa for Indonesia, and the standard product for a holiday or a short business trip is the Visitor Visa on arrival, which can be bought at the airport or, better, obtained in advance as an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA). The official e-Visa website of Indonesian Immigration describes the Visitor Visa as a single-entry visa valid for a 30-day stay for tourism, government visits, business meetings, goods purchasing or transit. Longer tourist stays use the 60-day electronic tourist visa.
The e-VOA is the same visa as the counter product, issued before you fly. Immigration officers at the port of entry verify it in their system, so there is nothing to buy or queue for on landing beyond passport control. Applications can be made for up to 5 people at once.
Visitor Visa on arrival: what it allows and what it forbids
The Visitor Visa covers five purposes: tourism, government visits, business meetings, goods purchasing and transit. It is single entry and it lasts 30 days from the arrival date. The immigration website is explicit about the limits, and the penalties for crossing them are severe.
- Allowed: holidays, visiting family and friends, attending meetings, buying goods, transit through Indonesia.
- Prohibited: any profit-making activity in any form; working on a Visitor Visa can lead to fines, deportation and other legal charges.
- Overstay: a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day, detention, deportation or a ban on future travel for a set period.

Indonesia visa costs for US citizens
Fees are set in Indonesian rupiah and paid to the government, online by Mastercard, Visa or JCB card for the e-VOA, or through the SIMPONI payment system for other e-Visas. Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy; any assistance fee we quote is separate from the amounts below.
| Visa | Official fee | Stay and validity |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor Visa on arrival (e-VOA or at the port) | IDR 500,000 | 30 days from arrival, single entry; the e-VOA must be used within 90 days of issue |
| Electronic tourist visa, 60 days | IDR 1,500,000 | Up to 60 days, extendable; must be used within 90 days of issue |
| Overstay penalty | IDR 1,000,000 per day | Plus possible detention, deportation or a travel ban |
The 60-day tourist visa is processed within 5 working days for most applicants and asks for proof of living expenses of at least US$2,000 or the equivalent. It can be extended or converted into another stay permit inside Indonesia, which the 30-day Visitor Visa cannot match.
Documents required for the Indonesian e-VOA
The list is short and entirely digital. Prepare the files before opening the portal, because the upload limits are strict.
- The full biodata page of a passport with at least 6 months validity from the arrival date, as a JPG, JPEG or PNG of no more than 200 KB.
- A passport-size photograph in the same formats, also under 200 KB.
- A valid Mastercard, Visa or JCB credit card; the card does not have to be in your own name.
- For the 60-day tourist e-Visa: a recent colour photograph and proof of living expenses of at least US$2,000.
How to apply for the e-VOA step by step
The application follows the three-step guideline on the official e-Visa website: apply, pay, download. The arrival card is a separate requirement for every traveller.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Apply on evisa.imigrasi.go.id
Choose the Visitor Visa on arrival (e-VOA) and enter your details exactly as they appear in the passport. One session can cover up to 5 people.
2. Step 2: Upload the passport page and photo
JPG, JPEG or PNG, each under 200 KB.
3. Step 3: Pay IDR 500,000
By Mastercard, Visa or JCB credit card. Report any suspended or failed transaction to the support desk before trying again.
4. Step 4: Download the visa
The download link appears at the final step and is emailed to you. Print it or keep it on your phone; officers verify it in their system.
5. Step 5: Submit the arrival card
All travellers must submit the electronic arrival card within 3 days before arrival in Indonesia.
The e-VOA must be used within 90 days of issue, and the 30-day stay counts from the arrival date, not from the issue date. If the details on the visa differ from the passport, the visa is invalid and the fee is not refunded.
Staying longer than 30 days: extensions and the 60-day tourist visa
Travellers who know they will stay more than a month should compare two routes before departure. The 60-day electronic tourist visa costs IDR 1,500,000, takes about 5 working days and can be extended or converted inside Indonesia. The Visitor Visa on arrival is cheaper and faster but shorter, and any extension must be handled through Indonesian Immigration once in the country.
| Question | e-VOA (Visitor Visa) | 60-day tourist e-Visa |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | IDR 500,000 | IDR 1,500,000 |
| Stay | 30 days from arrival | Up to 60 days, extendable |
| Processing | Issued online after payment | Most within 5 working days |
| Extra documents | Passport page and photo | Proof of living expenses of at least US$2,000 |
| Conversion to another permit | Not offered | Possible inside Indonesia |
Arrival in Indonesia: the arrival card and immigration control
Two checks happen before you reach the immigration desk. First, the electronic arrival card must have been submitted within three days before arrival; the immigration website states that all travellers are required to submit it. Second, e-VOA holders present the passport used in the application; officers verify the visa in their system and may ask about the purpose of the visit.
Officers reserve the right to deny entry to a Visitor Visa holder without explanation. In practice, questions arise when the stated purpose does not fit the visa, for example a traveller with equipment for paid work on a tourism visa. Keep the purpose simple and honest.
Pros of getting the e-VOA yourself
- IDR 500,000 paid by card, issued online without a consulate visit
- Up to 5 travellers in one application
- No airport visa queue, only passport control
Cons of getting the e-VOA yourself
- The 200 KB upload limit and exact-match rule cause failed sessions with no refund on errors
- Single entry and 30 days only; a side trip to Singapore ends the visa
- The arrival card is a separate step that travellers forget until the airline asks for it
