India e-Visa for US Citizens: Fees, Validity and How to Apply
US citizens need an e-Visa for India. Official fees from US$25, 30-day to 5-year validity, the 4-day rule and the e-Arrival Card, from official sources.
About this route
This guide covers the official India entry process for United States passport holders: required documents, the application steps, and where our optional support fits in.
Do United States citizens need a visa for India?
Yes. United States citizens need a visa before they board a flight to India, and for tourism, business, medical and conference trips the standard route is the Indian e-Visa, an electronic travel authorisation issued online by the Bureau of Immigration. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival for US passport holders. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco confirms that the e-Visa scheme is open to citizens of the United States of America.
The e-Visa is granted as an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) linked to your passport number. You print the approval, show it at check-in and give your biometrics at the immigration counter in India. If you prefer a sticker visa, Indian missions in the United States still issue regular paper visas through their visa application centres, including the restored long-term 10-year tourist visa for US nationals.
Which Indian e-Visa should a US traveller choose?
The e-Visa is not a single product. The official portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in lists separate categories for tourism, business, medical treatment, medical attendants, students, family visits, transit and conferences. Each category has its own validity and its own supporting document.
- e-Tourist Visa, one month: valid 30 days, multiple entry, cannot be extended or converted.
- e-Tourist Visa, one year: valid 365 days from the date the ETA is granted, multiple entry.
- e-Tourist Visa, five years: valid 5 years from the date of grant, multiple entry.
- e-Business Visa: valid one year, multiple entry; each continuous stay is limited to 180 days.
- e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant Visa: valid one year from arrival.
- e-Transit Visa:30 days from first arrival, for travellers passing through India.
Most American holidaymakers pick the one-year or five-year tourist option because the price difference is small and it removes the need to reapply for a second trip. Business travellers who attend meetings or trade fairs use the e-Business Visa. Journalists are the notable exception: the Consulate General of India in New York states that professional journalists are not eligible for an e-Visa, even for holidays, and must apply for a regular J category visa.

How long can US citizens stay in India on an e-Visa?
Validity and permitted stay are two different numbers, and mixing them up is the most common source of overstay problems. The one-month e-Tourist Visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. The one-year and five-year e-Tourist Visas allow multiple trips, but the total time spent in India during one calendar year must not exceed 180 days, whether you hold an e-Visa, a paper tourist visa or both.
Two further limits apply to every e-Visa. It cannot be extended in India and it cannot be converted into another visa type. It is also not valid for Protected, Restricted or Cantonment areas, which need a separate permit from the civil authority.
Official e-Visa fees for US passport holders
Fees are paid online to the Government of India during the application. Kolay Seyahat is an independent consultancy and does not collect government fees; any service charge we quote is separate from the amounts below, which are published by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.
| e-Tourist Visa type | Official fee | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day, arrival July to March | US$25 | 30 days |
| 30-day, arrival April to June | US$10 | 30 days |
| One year | US$40 | 365 days from grant |
| Five years | US$80 | 5 years from grant |
A bank transaction charge of 2.5% is added to every e-Visa fee. The fee is non-refundable because it pays for processing, not for the decision. The Government of India also states that it charges no emergency or express fee for e-Visas, so any website that sells "rush processing" is charging for its own service, not for a faster official decision.
The cheap April to June rate is real and often overlooked. Travellers landing in the hot season pay US$10 for the 30-day permit instead of US$25.
How to apply for the Indian e-Visa step by step
The application is completed entirely on the government portal. The Indian Embassy in Washington notes that no intermediary or agent is required, and that neither the embassy nor the consulates process e-Visa files; questions go to the portal helpdesk. The steps below follow the official sequence.
⏱️ Application Steps
1. Step 1: Check timing
Apply at least 4 days before your arrival date. For tourist and business e-Visas the portal lets you choose an arrival date inside a 120-day window.
2. Step 2: Fill the online form
Use only indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html. Enter your details exactly as they appear in the passport you will travel on. You can save a partly completed form and return later.
3. Step 3: Upload photo and passport page
A recent front-facing photo on a white background and a clear scan of the passport bio page are mandatory. Business, medical and conference applicants upload one extra document.
4. Step 4: Pay the fee
Pay online at least 4 days before travel. Payment status can take up to 2 hours to update; wait before trying again to avoid a double charge.
5. Step 5: Download the ETA
Check that the status reads GRANTED, print the Electronic Travel Authorisation and carry it with the same passport.
If an uploaded image is unclear, the portal emails you to re-upload it rather than rejecting the file outright. Answer that email quickly, because the 4-day clock keeps running.
Passport and document rules that cause refusals
The document list is short, but the specifications are strict and applications are refused when they are not met. The consulates publish the following conditions.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have two blank pages for the arrival stamp.
- You must travel on the passport used in the application. If you renew your passport after approval, carry the old passport with the ETA as well as the new one.
- Each traveller needs a separate passport; a child endorsed on a parent's passport cannot receive an e-Visa.
- Holders of diplomatic, official or laissez-passer documents are excluded from the e-Visa scheme.
- For a minor applying through a consulate, a notarised parental authorisation signed by both parents is required, with copies of their passports and marriage certificate.
Arrival in India: biometrics, the e-Arrival Card and health checks
Immigration in India now has three parts for e-Visa holders. First, biometric data is captured at the immigration counter on arrival; this is mandatory. Second, foreign nationals must complete the online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing, through the portal or the official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app; the government stresses that this card is arrival information, not a visa. Third, all passengers fill the aviation self-declaration form before reaching the immigration counters, as listed on India Visa Online.
E-Visa entry is permitted only at the authorised immigration checkposts published on the portal, which are airports and seaports. Travellers arriving from a yellow fever affected country must carry a yellow fever vaccination card or face quarantine for up to 6 days. Flights direct from the United States are not affected by this rule, but a stopover itinerary through such a country is.
Paper visa or e-Visa: which route suits your trip?
Americans have a choice that many nationalities lack. Regular paper visas, including the long-term 10-year tourist visa, are issued by Indian missions through the Indian Visa Application Centres run by VFS Global, using a three-step process: apply online, submit the printed form with documents and passport at the centre or mission on the appointed date, then collect the passport in person or by post. The e-Visa skips the visit entirely.
| Question | e-Visa | Regular paper visa |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I apply? | Online only, no visit | Online form, then in person at a visa application centre or mission |
| Longest tourist validity | 5 years | 10 years |
| Entry by land | Not allowed on tourist e-Visa | Not allowed on tourist visa |
| Extension or conversion in India | Not possible | Depends on visa category |
| Journalists | Not eligible | J visa through VFS |
| Family emergency | Standard timing, no express option | Emergency service at VFS for US passport holders of Indian origin, with evidence and an extra fee |
Pros of applying for the e-Visa yourself
- You pay only the official fee plus the 2.5% bank charge
- No appointment and no travel to a consulate
- Most tourist and business trips fit the e-Visa categories
Cons of applying for the e-Visa yourself
- A blurred photo or a passport page scan that fails the specification triggers a re-upload request and eats into the 4-day lead time
- Choosing the wrong category, for example a tourist e-Visa for paid work or journalism, is not fixable after entry because the e-Visa cannot be converted
- The portal does not publish a guaranteed decision time, so a last-minute application carries real risk
Business travellers and longer stays
The e-Business Visa is valid for one year with multiple entries, and each continuous stay may last up to 180 days. If your combined business stays in a calendar year exceed 180 days, you must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO or FRO) within two weeks after the 180th day. Conference delegates use the e-Conference Visa, and the organiser uploads the event documentation on the Ministry of Home Affairs conference site before delegates apply.
Medical patients and their attendants apply for the e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant categories, valid for one year from arrival, with a 120-day arrival window at the time of application. Students use the e-Student Visa, valid one year from the date of grant.
