Where to apply: Istanbul or Ankara?

The place of application follows your residence, and going to the wrong mission wastes the appointment. According to the list published by the consulate, applicants residing in Aydin, Balikesir, Bursa, Canakkale, Denizli, Edirne, Istanbul, Kirklareli, Kocaeli, Manisa, Mugla, Sakarya, Tekirdag and Yalova submit their applications to the Consulate General of India in Istanbul. Applicants living elsewhere in Türkiye must apply at the Embassy of India in Ankara.

You do not need a special document to prove residence: the consulate states that address proof from the Turkish e-government portal e-Devlet is accepted.

How to apply, step by step

The process starts online and finishes at the consulate. The consulate's guidelines state that no handwritten visa application is accepted.

The consulate asks applicants to apply online at least 20 days before the scheduled date of travel. That margin is for appointments and document gathering rather than for the processing itself.

Documents required for a tourist visa

The list published on the consulate's tourist visa page is as follows:

• Visa application form and two recent passport size photographs
• Residence proof (an e-Devlet address document is accepted)
• Original passport with a photocopy
• Copy of the hotel booking confirmation
• Flight details, both outbound and return
• Latest bank account statement or other proof of financial soundness
• If you are visiting someone in India, an invitation letter with the host's name, passport number, duration and purpose of stay, plus a copy of the host's ID, permanent address and contact number
• For minors travelling with only one parent, a no objection certificate from the non-travelling parent and a document showing parentage
• Copy of the Turkish residence permit for non-Turkish applicants

One further document depends on your employment status: employees provide a leave letter on the employer's letterhead with signature and seal; company owners provide a leave letter on their own company's letterhead with the authorised signature and registration papers; retired applicants provide original retirement documents with a photocopy; students provide a letter from their school or university with an ID copy; freelancers provide contract documents and a cover letter. If someone else funds the trip, a notarised financial support letter from the sponsor is required, though spouses, parents and children are exempt from that.

Processing time: one working day for Turkish nationals

This is the fact almost every competing guide omits, and the one that changes expectations most. The consulate's guidelines draw a clear line: if you are a Turkish national or a bonafide resident of Türkiye, the consulate requires one working day to process your application. If you are neither a Turkish national nor a long-term resident, a maximum period of three working days is required.

In other words the delay is not the review itself but getting an appointment and assembling the documents. That is the context for the 20 day recommendation. An appointment attended with incomplete documents costs more than that day alone, because the next slot may fall days later.

How the fee is paid

Payment is where the Indian consulate differs from many missions, and unprepared applicants are turned away. According to the consulate's guidelines, fees for visa service are accepted at the consulate in cash in US Dollars only, and applicants are asked to tender the exact amount.

That means no credit card, no debit card and no Turkish lira, and no assumption that change will be given. Prepare the right amount in the right notes before the appointment. Since the fee is non-refundable, a rejected application does not return the money.

The consulate also notes that gratis visas are issued to holders of diplomatic or official passports travelling on official visits and to nationals of certain countries. Türkiye is not among those nationalities.

Passport and photograph requirements

The consulate's FAQ sets two separate conditions for the passport: it must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended departure from India, and it must have two empty pages side by side for the visa. The second requirement is easy to overlook; a passport with no facing pages left stops the application even when the validity is fine. Long duration visas require a minimum of three years of passport validity.

The photograph specifications are published as well: JPEG format, minimum 10 KB and maximum 300 KB, equal height and width, full face and front view with eyes open, head centred in the frame showing the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, plain light coloured or white background, no shadows on the face or background, no borders. The same photograph must also be pasted onto the printed application form.

Do you need a transit visa when connecting through India?

This is the most common question on connecting itineraries, and the answer is conditional. According to the consulate, no Indian transit visa is required when all three of the following hold: your baggage is transferred to the next flight by the airline without any need to come out of the airport through immigration, your boarding pass for the destination is issued at the start of the journey, and you do not need to change airports to catch the next flight.

If any one of those breaks, a transit visa applies. The consulate also advises checking the need for an Indian transit visa with your airline. On cheap fares connecting through Delhi or Mumbai, confirm whether an airport change is involved before you buy the ticket.

Additional conditions for foreign nationals living in Türkiye

The rules diverge for applicants who are not Turkish citizens, a distinction no competing guide explains. According to the consulate, a residence permit is required for non-Turkish citizens to apply. That permit must still be valid for at least 6 more months, and previous residence permits covering the last 2 years must also be presented. A work permit is additionally required for business and employment visa applications.

The same pages state that non-residents are not eligible. A foreign national visiting Türkiye as a tourist therefore cannot obtain an Indian visa here.

Common mistakes and grounds for refusal

The recurring mistakes, drawn from the consulate's own warnings, are these:

• Submitting the online application without a photograph: the consulate repeats on two separate pages that such applications are rejected.
• A handwritten form: not accepted; the application must go through the online system.
• The wrong mission: ignoring the Istanbul and Ankara split based on your province of residence.
• A visa type that does not match the purpose: the family of a long-term visa holder is granted an Entry (X) visa, not a tourist visa.
• Not bringing cash US Dollars or not tendering the exact amount.

One more warning applies during the trip itself: satellite telephone services are not permitted in India. The consulate states that people, tourists included, found making unauthorised use of Thuraya satellite telephone services will be prosecuted and that the sets will be seized, and advises foreigners not to carry satellite phones to India.

Should you apply yourself?

The Indian application form is online and can be completed alone. The difficulty is not the form but the category specific document set and the appointment schedule: a missing item such as proof of financial soundness, an employer's leave letter or an invitation letter means the appointment has to be repeated.
