Do Turkey citizens need a visa for Malaysia?

No. According to the Malaysia travel notice of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish citizens holding ordinary, service, special or diplomatic passports are exempt from a tourist visa for 90 days. The visa list by country of the Immigration Department of Malaysia does not count Türkiye among the countries whose citizens must apply in advance.

Malaysia visa facts for Turkey citizens

According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival; otherwise entry is refused. Entry is recorded either with a physical entry stamp at a border police counter or by scanning the passport at an electronic gate. Tourist trips involve no application, fee or appointment; your passport and MDAC registration are enough.

For other purposes such as work, study or long-term stays, Malaysia's separate visa and permit procedures apply. The Immigration Department refers electronic visa applications to the malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my portal, which offers live chat support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Documents required to enter Malaysia

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.
  • Your MDAC registration (see the next section).
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate if you arrive from a country at risk of yellow fever; the Immigration Department requires it on arrival and the Malaysian Ministry of Health publishes the list of countries.
  • A customs declaration if you carry cash or bearer negotiable instruments worth more than US$10,000.

Application steps for the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card

There is no visa process for tourist entry, so there is no waiting time either. The only preparation is the MDAC, completed on the official MDAC portal within 3 days before entry. The same portal lets you check whether you are eligible to use the electronic gates. Registration is free.

⏱️ Before travel and on arrival

1. Step 1: Passport

It must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

2. Step 2: MDAC

Complete it on imigresen-online.imi.gov.my within 3 days before entry; it can also be filled in at the airport.

3. Step 3: Entry

Entry stamp at a counter or an electronic gate; tourist stay of up to 90 days.

4. Step 4: Customs

Declare cash above US$10,000; pork products may not be brought in.

Common mistakes to avoid at the Malaysian port of entry

  • Not checking passport validity: entry is refused with less than 6 months left from arrival.
  • Looking for a visa counter at the airport: tourist entry is visa-free for Turkish citizens.
  • Forgetting the MDAC: registration is done before the trip.
  • Giving wrong information: your personal details at immigration and on the digital arrival card must be correct; wrong or missing information causes delays.
  • Bringing pork products: they may not be brought in without a permit.

Answer the immigration officers' questions clearly and accurately, and state that you are visiting for tourism and how long you will stay. After passport control and baggage claim you pass through customs.

Extending your stay in Malaysia beyond 90 days

The tourist exemption is limited to 90 days. Longer stays and purposes other than tourism go through the permit procedures of the Malaysian authorities, and work in particular requires the appropriate permit. Book your return so that you leave before the exemption period ends.

Expert tips for a smooth Malaysia arrival

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises anyone travelling to the waters off the east coast of Sabah, for diving or similar purposes, to take maximum security precautions and to move in groups with the support of professional local tour companies, because of the security situation there. Travellers going overland from Malaysia to Thailand should keep the security situation in southern Thailand in mind.

  • Be careful about dengue fever, spread by mosquitoes, and about poisonous jellyfish in the sea.
  • The southwest monsoon, effective from November to March, especially affects the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the western part of Sarawak on Borneo and the eastern part of Sabah; floods, overflowing rivers and landslides occur in this period. Follow weather reports and warnings if you travel by road.

  • Read the Malaysia notes on seyahatsagligi.gov.tr a reasonable time before you travel.

Drug trafficking is punishable by death in Malaysia. Passengers may not bring pork or pork products; these can only enter as imports, subject to customs and veterinary permits. According to the reminder on the MDAC portal, cash or bearer negotiable instruments worth more than US$10,000 must be declared to customs, and Malaysian ringgit worth more than US$10,000 may not be carried without permission from Bank Negara Malaysia.

Traffic flows on the opposite side to Türkiye and vehicles are right-hand drive. The Turkish Ministry advises pedestrians to check both sides of the road when crossing, and to watch out for motorcycles, which may ride against traffic or on the pavement; motorcycle snatch thefts happen, though rarely. Do not carry food, drinks or toys in your hands in areas with monkeys.
