Ireland Visa for Nicaraguan Citizens: Requirements, Fees and How to Apply

Nicaraguan citizens need a visa to travel to Ireland. The Irish Department of Justice introduced the visa requirement for nationals of Nicaragua with effect from 15 June 2026. It also applies to holders of diplomatic and service passports.

Do Nicaraguan citizens need a visa for Ireland?

Yes. Since 15 June 2026 a Nicaraguan passport holder must obtain an Irish short stay (C) visa before travelling to Ireland. The rule is new, so guides written before June 2026 no longer reflect the current entry requirements.

A transit visa is also required if you only pass through an Irish airport on the way to another country.

Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa does not allow you to enter Ireland.

Visa fees

The fee covers the cost of processing and is not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn. The office that handles your application may charge extra for document submission or consular services. Your AVATS summary form tells you where and how to pay.

How to apply

1. Complete the online application in AVATS, the Automated Visa Application and Tracking System. Answer every question fully.
2. Print, sign and date the application summary form. It names the visa office that will process your file.
3. Send your passport, two colour passport photographs and the supporting documents to that office within 30 days of creating the online application.

Write your AVATS transaction number and your signature on the back of each photograph.

Supporting documents

• A passport valid for at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave Ireland
• Proof of the visa fee payment
• Bank statements showing you can pay for your stay
• Evidence of ties that oblige you to return home, such as employment or studies
• Details of any previous visa refusals by any country

Processing time

Applications are handled in the order they arrive. The Irish Immigration Service Delivery says a decision can be expected within about 8 weeks from the date the visa office receives the application. Missing documents or extra checks make it longer, so apply well before your travel date.

Length of stay

A short stay visa covers visits of up to 90 days for tourism, family visits or business. The immigration officer at the border decides on entry and the permitted length of stay.
